Warm Up Exercises

Here are some warm up exercises for guitar that will help prevent nasty things like tendonitis or RSI (repetitive strain injury).

I had RSI a long time ago and had to stop playing for months. The worst thing you can do is to keep on playing when you are in pain.

Never play with cold hands and if you are getting any pains in the wrists or fingers, go and see your doctor.

If you play for hours at a time, make sure you take take plenty of short breaks.




It's good sense to spend at least 5 minutes warming up before doing any serious workout on the guitar, even if you find it very boring.

They also have the added bonus of improving your left and right hand co-ordination all over the neck!

Play this first one using only alternating pick strokes.


Keep this going as far along the neck as you can, at least to the 12th fret. Then play it going down like this:

Play it all the way down to fret 1.




Play this one using alternate picking to warm up your right hand:


Keep it going as high up the neck as you can, and then come back all the way down, like so:
